What if the conclusion is that hiring you isn't right for me?
We say so. The assessment is delivered anyway and you can take it to whoever you need. Selling development that doesn't solve the problem costs more in the long run than losing that project.
How long does an assessment take?
It depends on the size of the process, but for a mid-sized operation it's usually a couple of weeks between interviews, reviewing what exists and writing it up. What can't be done is fitting it into a one-hour meeting.
Can you run a project delivered by another supplier?
Yes, and sometimes it's the healthier arrangement: whoever runs it isn't the one billing development hours. It's worth defining the scope of that role up front so it doesn't become another layer of meetings.

That last conclusion is more common than it sounds, and it's the one no supplier who only sells development will ever give you.
